New gaedt Version: 0.8.6

AppEditor_Handlers.pngWell, it's been too long since I announced the release of version 0.8.5 of gaedt. Unfortunately some events unrelated to the project have delayed the 0.8.6 release, but it's out now!

There are a couple of new things in this release. The first notable addition is the Handlers tab of the Application Editor. Now you can add, remove, rearrange, and edit all of the handlers in your app.yaml file without using a text editor. This functionality brings the Application Editor to a minimum level of completeness. There are some quality of life improvements still to be made, but functionally we believe the editor is complete. Disagree? Let us know!

SDKView.pngAnother small but interesting addition to gaedt is the introduction of the SDK view. This is a simple view that users can utilize to determine what version of the Google App Engine SDK is currently active. Note that the gaedt automatically downloads the latest Google App Engine SDK, so this view is informational only. Ok that's not entirely true - there is a "Check for Updates" button in the top-right part of the view. That button will force gaedt to check for a newer SDK. Since gaedt typically only checks for new SDK versions on Eclipse startup, that button may be useful to some users.

New gaedt Version: 0.8.5

I am pleased to follow up my initial blog post announcing the gaedt project with another blog post announcing the next version: gaedt 0.8.5

AppYamlEditor.png My hope is that we can get frequent releases of gaedt put up onto Google Code very frequently until we arrive at a stable, feature-rich version. I don't really have a great sense at this point about precisely what that means. The project is pretty fluid at the moment. We need to really nail down what the set of features will be, and then create a set of milestones to which the features can be assigned. Until that happens, we'll all just have to settle for frequent, somewhat haphazard releases. For the record, I'm OK with that. At least for now.

What are some of the things that are new in 0.8.5? I'm glad you asked. There are two primary issues that have been addressed. You can find more information about those issues here.

You can get a sense for what's coming up in the future by clicking on the "What We're Working On" link in the sidebar.

Finally, I wanted to mention that if anyone would like to contribute their time to do a little bit of coding on this project, we're happy to accept it. The goal of gaedt is to create the premier IDE for Google App Engine application development.

Announcing a New Project: gaedt

Hey everyone. Thanks for somehow finding the official gaedt blog. You can find the official gaedt project web page here:

The goal of this new project is to create a truly excellent IDE for Google App Engine application development. We are building gaedt on top of a very solid base - namely Eclipse and PyDev.

Note that the current version of the IDE is only 0.8.4. Be patient, as we have just started!
